Socialist slump continues in Brussels as Défi advances further

Last night’s Ipsos poll for a grouping of Belgian media is only the fourth national survey of 2017 and only the second of the year from this agency. It shows the Francophone Socialist Party (PS) confirmed as being in deep trouble in Brussels, while the liberal regionalists of Défi continue their rapid advance in both the capital and Wallonia. In both cases Défi has doubled its score compared to the January survey from Ipsos: in Brussels it is now the second-placed party.

For the struggling socialists, a result of 12.1 per cent of Federal voting intentions for Brussels confirms that the shock July poll from Dedicated which gave them just 10.9 per cent was not a one-off. In Brussels, the PS is now polling at half its 24.9 per cent score in the May 2014 Federal election, and in Wallonia it is 11.3 points below its winning 32 per cent election total.

In the Flandrian community the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) remains comfortably the leading force, turning in its best poll score of the year at 30.2 per cent. The only other notable move in Flanders is the fall in support for the populist and nationalist Vlaams Belang, down to 7.9 per cent after usually scoring in double figures this year.

Green groups across all three constituent parts of Belgium continue to attract support well above their last ballot box scores, achieving 13.4 per cent in Flanders, 12.7 per cent in Wallonia and 12.3 per cent in Brussels.

In contrast the leftist Workers Party (PTB), whose rise has been one of the polling phenomena of the year, slips to 17.5 per cent in Wallonia and 9 per cent in Brussels, well below its best scores in March and July polls from Dedicated.
