Belgium’s Greens surge to historic polling highs

Green parties in all three parties of Belgian continue their rising scores of 2017 in the new Kantar TNS poll released yesterday. In Wallonia, the Ecolo party has hit a new record of 18.5 per cent of Federal voting intentions, putting it into third position for the first time in any opinion poll this year. Ecolo is now 10 percentage points ahead of its May 2014 election result of 8.2 per cent (see chart below).

Meanwhile in the capital territory of Brussels, the combined Francophone and Flemish Green score has burst through the 20 per cent barrier (16.7 per cent Ecolo, 3.4 per cent Groen). In Flanders, 13.9 per cent for the Greens is just short of a good TNS poll score from April this year, but is far ahead of the 8.6 per cent scored at the election.

Two other findings of note in this survey also come from Flanders. The liberals of Open VLD achieve their best opinion poll score of 2017 at 15.5 per cent, exactly in line with their 2014 election tally. And the hard-right separatists of Vlaams Belang slump to just 6.5 per cent, having polled in double figures in some surveys at the start of this year.

(The last TNS poll in Belgium was carried out in Flanders only, hence no comparatives are given below for Wallonia and Brussels. Yesterday’s release marks the start of a new survey series with fresh TV and newspaper partners.)
