Good week for Macron, Le Pen – Hamon slides

Emmanuel Macron capped off another good campaign week in this evening’s Ifop/Fiducial poll as he stretched his advantage over the trailing Francois Fillon to a high of eight points, while staying neck-and-neck with Marine Le Pen in first round voting intentions.

The centrist candidate and founder of the En Marche! movement also delivered a solid performance with the other daily ‘rolling’ pollster, Opinionway, scoring 25 per cent on four out of five days this week, with only one dip to 24 per cent.

The Front National’s leading lady can celebrate a campaign high with Opinionway in this morning’s daily poll, reaching 28 per cent after standing consistently at 27 per cent for four days.

Conservative Fillon, who was formally charged by prosecutors this week, is battling to re-attain 20 per cent, let alone catch Macron. He has been at 18 per cent with Ifop for the last two days and only achieved 20 per cent on three out of five days with Opinionway. New revelations about the funding of his clothing will hardly help matters.

As leading Socialists from President Hollande downwards either fail to endorse or actively campaign for Benoit Hamon, the left-wing former education minister is going nowhere in the polls. He hit an all-time low with any pollster in Opinionway’s research today, at just 12 per cent. To Hamon’s left, France Insoumise candidate Jean-Luc Mélenchon is also little changed this week.

What is striking about both these daily polling exercises is how little real movement there has been during this week. That possibly tallies with new lows reached in the public interest’s in the Presidential campaign. (Both pollsters ask a question on this once a week). Just 58 per cent are ‘very’ or ‘somewhat’ interested according to Opinionway (down four points), and 66 per cent according to Ifop/Fiducial (down five points).
