Macron slows ratings fall with IFOP

French President Emmanuel Macron sees the fall in his approval ratings slowing sharply in yesterday’s October survey from Ifop-Fiducial for Paris Match and Sud Radio – after a summer of steep decline. Meanwhile his Prime Minister Edouard Philippe has stabilised his ratings in modestly positive territory with no movement compared to September’s poll.

Macron’s net approval rating slips three points to -11, with 44 per cent of respondents either approving completely or partially of his actions as President. This is down from 46 per cent in September, but it is only a modest loss compared to a 20-point decline between May and September. 55 per cent disapprove completely or partially of his work, up just one point on September.

In its commentary Ifop points to a relatively higher loss of support for Macron among socialist (PS) and green (EELV) voters following recent confrontations around labour law reform – meaning the President’s support base is moving slightly to the right.

For the Prime Minister, there are some striking differences. Most notably, Republican (LR) voters continue to offer him strong backing, despite the party’s ongoing moves to expel him for agreeing to serve under Macron. Centre-right (UDI) and green voters are also far more positive towards him; in contrast, Philippe has relatively less support among En Marche (LREM) and MoDem voters.

Ifop also asks its regular question about who constitutes the strongest opposition in France. Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s France Insoumise increases its lead in this category, up one point to 46 per cent. No doubt Mélenchon’s leading role in street protests against the labour reforms has boosted his standing. In second place are the Republicans on 24 per cent (+2), ahead of the Front National on 20 per cent (-1). Just 7 per cent of respondents name the ailing Socialist Party.
